Street Child by Berlie Doherty is a compelling historical novel inspired by the true story of Jim Jarvis, a poor boy living in Victorian London. After the death of his mother, Jim is separated from his sisters and forced to survive on the streets, where he faces hunger, danger, and exploitation. Despite countless hardships, Jim never gives up hope and eventually finds a path toward a better future. The novel also introduces students to the social reforms that led to the founding of the Dr Barnardo’s children’s homes. In this course, students will explore themes such as resilience, family, poverty, justice, compassion, and the importance of education. Through close reading, guided discussion, and literary analysis, students will examine character development, historical setting, conflict, and the author’s portrayal of social inequality. Writing activities will include reflective responses, character analysis, historical connections, and evidence-based essays.
