The Giver Novel Study
The Giver by Lois Lowry is a thought-provoking dystopian novel that explores memory, freedom, and the true meaning of a perfect society. The story follows Jonas, a twelve-year-old boy living in a seemingly peaceful and orderly community where pain, conflict, and choice have been eliminated. When he is selected to become the Receiver of Memory, Jonas begins to discover the hidden truths behind his world and must question everything he has been taught.
In this course, students will explore themes such as individuality, freedom, emotion, control, and the importance of human experience. Through close reading, guided discussion, and literary analysis, students will examine symbolism, world-building, and character transformation. Writing activities will include reflective responses, theme analysis, and argumentative writing that encourage students to think critically about the balance between safety and freedom. The course strengthens reading comprehension, analytical thinking, and academic writing while helping students engage deeply with classic dystopian literature.
